R10 Ethics Awareness and Advancement Committee (EAAC)
About
The Ethics Awareness and Advancement Committee has been initiated under IEEE R10 Director Lance Fung in 2023. The aim of the committee is to bring awareness of the IEEE Code of Ethics amongst the R10 members and partners. IEEE R10 seeks dedicated and honest volunteers who uphold the highest standards of integrity and ethics. The Code of Conduct serves as a shared commitment to operate with honesty, even in challenging situations. The Ethics Awareness and Advancement Committee (EAAC) maintains zero tolerance for unethical behavior and emphasizes compliance with laws and regulations.
The Code of Conduct and firm policies promote honest relationships, enabling the continual growth of IEEE’s networking legacy. It is crucial to report any suspicions of illegal or unethical conduct by IEEE Volunteers. The Standards of Conduct outline the importance of honesty, avoiding conflicts of interest, compliance with applicable laws, and safeguarding confidential information. By adhering to these principles, volunteers contribute to preserving the esteemed reputation of IEEE.
The committee is chaired by Dr Sudeendra Koushik and is ably supported by Dr Suresh Nair, Dr Takako Hashimoto, Prof Mousmi Ajay, Dr Siva Reddy, Dr Ashwini, and Mr Yeshwanth L M.
Goals and Vision
Promote Ethical Culture: Foster an ethical culture within and outside IEEE by raising awareness, educating members, and promoting ethical behaviors and decision-making at all levels.
Develop Ethical Guidelines: Establish and update ethical guidelines and policies that align with industry standards and best practices, ensuring ethical conduct at all levels.
The Role and Importance of the Committee: The purpose of this initiative is to ensure every technologist is educated, trained, and empowered to prioritize ethical considerations in IEEE volunteering. Knowledge is power. Ethics is Super Power!
Plans for 2023
- Interactive Sessions at R10 Events: Conduct engaging and interactive sessions at key R10 events to increase awareness of the IEEE Code of Ethics. These sessions will educate attendees about ethical conduct and provide practical examples and case studies.
- Online Assessments and Education Initiatives: Develop online assessments and educational initiatives to allow members to test their understanding of the IEEE Code of Ethics. These initiatives will provide valuable resources and materials to enhance knowledge and promote ethical decision-making.
- Collaboration with Sections: Encourage active participation from IEEE Sections to ensure their members are aware of the IEEE Code of Ethics. Sections will be recognized for their efforts in promoting ethical conduct and will be encouraged to organize events and activities to educate their members.
- Collaboration with Other Regions: Work closely with other regions to create collaborative events and initiatives focused on ethics. Sharing resources and knowledge across regions will enhance the reach and impact of the awareness programs.
- Collaboration with EMCC: Collaborate closely with the IEEE Ethics, Member Conduct, and Conflict Resolution Committee (EMCC) to build momentum and enhance the coverage of ethics-oriented programs. This partnership will ensure a comprehensive and coordinated approach to ethics awareness within the IEEE community.
- Survey and Feedback: Conduct a brief online survey to assess the understanding level of the IEEE Code of Ethics among members. This will provide valuable insights and help tailor future awareness programs to address specific areas of concern.
